What to wear and expect at an Indian wedding

Sangeet Night

Sangeet literally translates to ‘music’. During an Indian wedding, the Sangeet is an event held a few days before the wedding and is filled with dance, music, and vibrant color!

Tips on what to wear:

  • Bright colorful dresses
  • Lenghas, anarkalis and shararas
  • Something easy to dance in

Wedding Ceremony

Friends and family gather to watch the bride and groom at the mandap (altar) as they share their vows to support and love each other.

Tips on what to wear:

  • Avoid black and red
  • Feel free to get fancy
  • Something comfortable

Reception

This event is the closest in tradition to an American reception. Cocktail hour usually precedes a night of introductions, dinner, speeches, performances (sometimes) and an open dance floor. Guests usually change into a more formal outfit for the reception after the wedding ceremony ends.
